Thomas O'Dowd, MD, ABOS, AAOS, is a compassionate orthopedic surgeon at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates, with locations in Voorhees and Turnersville, New Jersey. Dr. O'Dowd is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Dr. O'Dowd received his bachelor's degree in 1975 from New York University, where he was an NYScholar and co-captain of the swimming team. A Hirschl Scholar at Cornell University Medical College, he received his medical degree in 1979 before completing his surgical internship and residency on the Halsted Surgical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also served a six-month fellowship with the Hopkins Reconstructive Service of the Hand, Hip, and Knee at Baltimore's Good Samaritan Hospital. He joined Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates in 1984.
Renowned for performing the first arthroscopic surgery procedure at the West Jersey Hospital System (now Virtua) in 1984, as well as introducing instrumented spinal fusion there in 1985, Dr. O'Dowd also served as chairman of the Virtua-West Jersey Health System Department of Orthopedic Surgery from January 2004 to January 2008. Currently, Dr. O'Dowd's practice includes orthopedic trauma; arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist, and elbow; reconstructive and joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder; and spinal surgery including laminectomies, discectomies, and fusions.
Dr. O'Dowd was voted "Top Doc in Orthopedic Surgery" by his peers in SJ Magazine countless years. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Philadelphia and New Jersey Orthopedic Societies, and the Camden County and New Jersey Medical Societies.
