WHEN WOULD I NEED A HIP REPLACEMENT?

You may need a hip replacement following a severe fracture or if you develop avascular necrosis, a condition that destroys the bone. But the main reason people get a hip replacement is to restore a joint damaged by advanced arthritis.

Of the different types of arthritis that can develop in your hip joint, osteoarthritis is the most common. Osteoarthritis develops over years of wear-and-tear that break down the cartilage.

Though early treatment can slow down the damage, osteoarthritis gets progressively worse. When medications, injections, and physical therapy no longer help, your next treatment option is a total hip replacement.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

During hip replacement surgery, your provider at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates removes the damaged parts of the hip and femur (thigh bone) that make up the hip joint. Then they reshape the bones to fit the prosthetic joint.

They begin by removing the rounded top of your femur and replacing it with a metal prosthetic component. This implant consists of a stem that your provider inserts into the center of the femur. Then they attach a round ball to the stem to recreate the natural shape of your bone.

Your provider eliminates the damaged tissues in the socket of your hip joint, restructures the area, and implants a metal shell. Once the shell is in place, they insert a cup-shaped liner. The plastic liner replaces the original cartilage and allows smooth movement in the joint.

Finally, your provider inserts the ball into the socket. After they close the incision, your hip replacement is finished.

HOW DO ADVANCED COMPONENTS IMPROVE MY HIP REPLACEMENT?

The team at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates offers several types of implants that help to ensure your new hip joint fits you and supports your ongoing activity.

    Taperloc Hip System

The Taperloc Hip System includes several stem options so your provider can choose the one that’s the best fit for your anatomy. When your implant fits properly, your new hip joint lasts longer. Studies show that the Taperloc works for people of all ages and lasts longer than 20 years.

    E1® Antioxidant Infused Technology

Hip replacements contain plastic inserts. Though this medical-grade plastic, called polyethylene, is incredibly strong, it can interact with oxygen over time and start to come loose. E1 plastic inserts are infused with vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that helps to prevent this problem.

    WHAT CAUSES HIP PAIN?

You’re more likely to develop hip pain as you get older and wear-and-tear leads to degenerative changes. But sports activities and overuse injuries can cause painful hip problems at any age.

Additionally, a few hip conditions begin in childhood. One example is developmental dysplasia, which occurs when the hip socket doesn’t form correctly.

The most common causes of hip pain include:
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Muscle strains
    • Labral tear
    • Synovitis
    • Bursitis
    • Tendonitis
    • Hip fractures
    • Nerve entrapment
    • Hip impingement
Problems outside the hip joint can also cause hip pain. For example, a pinched nerve in your lower back, weak core muscles, and urological problems often cause hip pain.

WHAT OTHER SYMPTOMS COULD I HAVE WITH HIP PAIN?

The conditions that cause hip pain often result in additional symptoms. You may experience:
    • Swelling
    • Joint stiffness
    • Muscle weakness
    • Limited movement
    • A grinding noise during hip movement
    • Pain that’s worse when you’re active or lay on the affected side
You can also have a problem in your hip that causes pain outside the joint. You may develop pain in your groin, thigh, or buttocks.

    HOW IS HIP PAIN TREATED?

The experienced team at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates offers comprehensive care for hip pain. They can safely and accurately identify problems in the joint and the surrounding structures by taking digital X-rays.

Once your provider diagnoses the problem, they develop a customized treatment plan. Some hip problems, such as a fracture, dislocation, or torn ligament may need immediate surgery. Otherwise, surgery is only used as the last resort.

At Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates, treatment for hip pain begins with conservative therapies. Your treatment plan may include:
    • Activity modification
    • Resting your hip
    • Physical therapy
    • Assistive devices
    • Anti-inflammatory medications
    • Corticosteroid injections
    • Viscosupplementation
    • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
If your pain sticks around despite conservative treatments, your provider at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates may recommend minimally invasive hip arthroscopy. During arthroscopy, they insert a narrow instrument into the joint, examine the tissues, and repair problems as needed.

The team at Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates specializes in helping men and women with arthritis maintain healthy joints and prevent surgery. But once your arthritis causes serious joint damage, your best treatment option is a hip replacement.

If you have hip pain, early treatment lowers your risk of further joint damage. Don’t wait to call Advocare South Jersey Orthopedic Associates or request an appointment online.
